We cannot deny that reading is our need to update our knowledge everyday. Even in Japan, reading is not a need anymore but it has become their culture. Adopting Behaviorism theory, since elementary school, children in Japan have been forced to read in ten minutes before their class begun. As a result, while they grow, they become accustomed to reading. We can see many Japanese pleasantly read in anywhere. In public transportation such as at bus, train or in other places such as on street we can see this view. For them, to read everything, tough it is a comics is a guarantee as the first step to build reading culture. In addition, in such a very modern era, we can easily find any kind of information we need. Books or sites on internet are available as valuable sources for reading. Unfortunately, a lot of people are reasoning that they can not read. Here are some common reasons why a lot of people do not read.
Not having enough time or too busy. Now, try to admit that each people has exactly the same 24 hours a day. If someone needs time eight hours to sleep and eight hours to work, s/he still has eight hours remains to rest. If s/he still need time to having fun, let us say about four hours, s/he still has four hours left. It is impossible for someone to not having enough time to read since s/he can read everywhere.
Not having motivation to read. I think this is the essential reason why people do not read. I do admit that if a person does not have a motivation to read, then what for does s/he read? I myself, set some motivations to read. It comes originally from my awarenes that reading has a lot of advantages. For example, I like to read a lot because I intent to improve my speaking ability. This motivation came when I saw my classmate argued briefly my lectures. I saw him debated my lecture with a detail data he got from his reading. This is only one example of my motivation. Of course there are other motivation that make people want to read a lot.
Being lazy. I think it is very human. Each people ever feel the same. I do not agree if there is a claim that, for example, a famous figure such as Emha Ainun Najib never feel lazy. In one article that I read, he admitted that he had this phase where he felt very lazy to continue his reading in the most. Then he decided to not let it go on. He forced himself to read and read. Finally, he succeed passing this phase, and now he becomes a famous writer and speaker in many events.
The last common reason is not having books. It can be one reason, I think, why people do not read. They admit that they do not have enough money to purchase books. This reason reminds me of an advice given by my father’s boss. She is old, retired teacher. When I visited her house at Kebagusan in South Jakarta, she said,”Oky, if you do not have enough money to purchase even only a book, then just read in library or find any possible way that enables you to read.” What I mean by this advice is that if we don’t have a book to read, then why don’t we just visit a library. We could find some books which are valuable for us. Another way is why not we just borrow our friends’ books. As long as we read the books, I believe that they will lend their books with pleasure.
Above are some reasons why a lot of people do not read. We can not deny if sometimes they really come to us. But then, the choice is on our hand whether we let them go on or we choose to fight againts them. One thing we must remember is that reading is a root of a big revolution in any fields. Last, “Let’s read to learn everything from the past, to learn everything to do what we face now, and to learn to prepare for the future.” Let’s read
