Books and developed countries have become two inseparable things. All developed countries in the world rocognize that the good politicy of the book system is an absolute requirement to improve a publishing world. The purpose of this is to foster reading interest and culture, to reduce literacy eratication number, to improve the nation’s intelegence and the progress of the nation.
Culture of reading Indonesia is far below culture of reading in Japan. According to www.merdeka.com as stated in UNESCO research, the interest index for reading culture in Indonesia is 0.001%. This means that of 1,000 residents only 1 serious reading. the results of the analysis from the 3-yearly BPS survey also noted that the reading culture level of Indonesian citizens is only 17.66%, while the watching interest reaches 91.67%. And compared to Japan that is almost 99% of Japanese citizens serious reading. In March 2016 and then, Most Literate Nations in the World, instead released an international literacy ranking that put Indonesia in the order of 60 total 61 countries. In Indonesia only 0,001% from citizens in Indonesia who serious in reading. In contrast, it is upside down with Japan which almost 99% from citizens in Japan who serious in reading.
The big differences is also can be seen the results of research about the rank in interest of reading in Indonesia and Japan. According to reseach published by CCSU (University of Connecticut Center United States) Indonesia being on rank 60th from 61th far below with Japan, who being on rank 32th. CCSU (University of Connecticut Center United States) in determining this global literacy rating is number of libraries, newspaper circulation, availabity of the computer, internet acces, leading university research products in several countries and basic ability test results (PISA) and reading test. This really shows that Indonesia it’s far below Japan in terms of interest in reading.
Several factors that make Indonesia is ranked 60th among them are facilities and habit in Indonesia.
The different about culture of reading between Japan and Indonesia in facility, one of them, is bookstore. In Japan bookstore just as much with as well as the number of bookstores in the United States. many bookstores in Japan that provide new books that have been sealed plastic seal, so many people can do Tachiyomi. Because the seller assumes that the more people who do Tachiyomi, the greater the number of people buying books that have been read on the next day. Different with Indonesia, many bookstores which does not provide new books that have sealed plastic seals to be read by customers. sellers assume that opening a plastic seal will only make damage the book, and will cause loss. even the chairs that are usually used for reading are provided bookstores to buyers are now rarely encountered.
The next difference in facilty is television program. Television program that also affect the interest of reading its citizens is the existence of Sekiguchi bookstore on television. This event very useful for those who love books but can not be long time in the bookstore. Because in this event the audience can see some kind of reference book that is show at this program. This event aims to facilitate citizens in Japan who did not get to go to the bookstore, they can order the book by online or calling if interested to buy the book. Different the case with television shows in Indonesia, too many drama sinetron and gossip interteiment that showed.
The second different is about habit of reading between Indonesia citizens and Japan citizens. In Japan reading habits have become a culture in this country. one of them already mentioned above is the culture of reading while standing (Tachiyomi) then book in monthly shopping list and read on public transportation. Japanese citizens prefer to get rid of their bored at public transportation by reading, whether reading comics or other reading books. In contrast to Indonesian citizen who are more often busy with their mobile phones or smartphones while on public transportation, this became one of the influence of screen culture in the digital era in Indonesia which makes Indonesia not accustomed to reading culture.
As seen culture reading in Indonesia and Japan above. We can see that from several aspects that Japan more recruits for its citizens for interest to reading is higher. I contrast with interest to reading in Indonesia. From that several differences that have been discussed above, we can adapt the positive value and can also be used as a valuable lesson from Japan. One of them by familiar themselves with the culture of reading books, like what many citizens in japan already do. It’s cause however it feels culture of reading in Indonesia is still very low. Situation must make as a trigger to change Indonesia for the better country next day.
