I never see such a hidden gem in any movies I have watched in 2013. I know that this movie is truly a flop; many people say that this movie is so confusing. But I came into a local cinema to watch this movie, with an empty glass. One thing that I know, the time I saw the ending credits, my glass was already overflowed with so many wonderful thoughts.
Based on a novel with same title by David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas consists of six intertwining stories across six eras. The stories start back to 1849, forward to 1936, to 1973, to 2012, to 2144 of NeoSeoul, and finally 106 years after the fall. At the first half of the movie, I’m pretty sure that you’ll say, “What the heck is this? Why the scenes are so jumpy. What are the connection between A and B, and C, and so on”. I certainly agree with you. But I just want to tell you to sit down, relax, enjoy the movie, and let the miracle happens.
The first story, taking place in a ship, is about Adam Ewing, a notary. He is being treated by a doctor to cure his malady. This part of story is full of deception and redemption. How a good deed you do today, probably can save your life some time later. The second story is about Robert Frobisher, an amanuensis (one employed to write from dictation or to copy manuscript). He works for Vyvian Ayrs, a composer. While working for Vyvian, Frobisher read a journal entitled The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing.
The third one tells a story about Luisa Rey, a journalist. While investigating about a Nuclear Plant, she met Rufus Six smith. Rufus tells Luisa that he has very important documents to help Luisa cracking the scandal behind the Nuclear Plant. Luisa then comes to visit Rufus, only to find that he’s already dead, leaving no traces of the documents but the letters from Rufus Six smith’s lover, Robert Frobisher. (By now, I am sure you start to realize the interconnection between the stories).
The fourth story is a comic relief one. Timothy Cavendish, an old publisher, having a huge debt he seeks help from his brother. Not realizing that his brother is up to something, Timothy knows trapped in a nursing home. And then, he begins planning to escape from the nursing home. This story’s indeed was inspiring Sonmi~451, a human clone. This part of story is about Commander Hae Joo Chang, helping Sonmi to escape her destiny, and later, destiny of entire human kind. And finally, the final part sets in Post-Apocalyptic era. This part of story is the final conclusion for every action of every character from the previous stories.
I love the way this movie try to connect literally almost everything. First, every actors play as different character at different story. For example, Tom Hanks become the doctor at first story, a hotel manager at second, a scientist at third, a brute writer at fourth, an actor at fifth and Zachry at the last part. Second, from scene to scene, it is almost likely when a scene end, the next scene has something related to previous scene. For example, when a scene end with a door closed, the next scene start with a door opened. The other one is at the end of the scene, a character tells a protagonist figuratively not to cross her, and at the next scene, another protagonist is seen literally crossing a bridge, and so on you can find it by yourself.
If you haven’t watched Cloud Atlas yet, watch it now. Let your mind be overflowed with stunning visual and music score. The more you engaged in the story, the more you enjoyed the movie. If you feel you want to finish just the half of it, then just continue finish the rest half of it. Because as Robert Frobisher said, a half-finished book is, after all, a half-finished love affair.
