Culture is the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society. Every civilization in the world has its own distinctive culture which continues to grow and develop throughout times. In this modern era, the transition of the culture-habitual is influenced by the impact of globalization in all aspects of life. Japan and South Korea, for example, are two countries that survive against globalization. Both countries can preserve their own culture amid penetration of other cultures, and eventually make their own kind of culture. Modern culture such as pop music, modern cinema or acts, and comic were unable to influence these two Asian countries, yet Japan and South Korea has made their own influence toward those kind of modern culture.
According to Jules Combarieu, Music is an art from human opinion which has postive effect for all people who want to hear it. Music continues transforming and the result of this process bring new genre of music. In Japan, they exactly influencesthe popular music (pop) into its own music character called Japanese Pop (J-Pop). J-Pop has many various type of music, such as vocaloid, J-Rock, hip-hop, electric and enka. J-Pop is the transitional result of the development era that is said to come in at about 1990s, and began to get acknowledged by the world in 2000s. However, according to a source of a data in 2012, this music’s market share unable to raise and its fans keep declining.
Influencing pop music is not only happened in Japan but also in South Korea. This Ginger country also influenced the popular music development into their version called Korean Pop (K-Pop). K-Pop drew world’s attention when a song entitled with Sorry, Sorry by Super Junior released in 2009. Since then, this music continued to significantly increased and quite dominated world’s music market share. Furthermore, when a Korean musician PSY released Ganghnam Style song which eventually became the most viewed video on YouTube, K-Pop is getting demanded.Moreover, PSY also got achievement as the Worldwide Fame 2012. In 2017, another Korean song “Blood, Sweet and Tears” by Bangtan Boys makes a new history as the first musician from Asia who is awarded from as Top Social Artist by Billboard Awards 2017, defeating Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth, Justin Bieber, and Selena Gomez.
In term of acting, Japan and South Korea also influenced their own distinctive culture into kind of this art. Japan hs art of acting called Dorama. Fairytale, romance and action are some characteristic genres of Japanese dorama. Uniquely, some producers of dorama often adapting story from Animes which have high rate. Unfortunately, dorama didn’t have many followers due to the fact that they are quite not good to compete quality if compairing with the others drama from the other country.
On the one hand, in South Korea, Korean Drama (K-Drama) is the biggest art of acting which several of its story Adapted the real life, so that the story can touch its viewers’ feeling and making them prefer to watch it. Furthermore, there are many fans prefer watching K-Drama owing to the fact that the visual of the characters are very good to see and their acting looks natural, so it helped them to sell their product. Moreover, if the product hashigh rating,it will affect positively to reap more achievements. In 2016, K-Drama acquired the biggest achievement, Descedant of the Sun became one of the most famous K-Drama from South Korea which reached the higest rating until 38.8 percent in all episodes of the drama.
In relation to the drawing, In this modern era, some nations in the world including in Japan and South Korea use drawing technic as a media for expressing their idea and opinion into drawing form. Furthermore, the ability to design and conceptualize a story based on their country’s characteristic are essential for the writer or comic maker. Regardless to the fact that each nations have distinction characters and strength. For example, Japan’s comic or Manga has some specializes such as, drawing technicswhich the result of their product looks real. Besides, Manga has many genres that makes readers interest to read it, and lead it to be demanded at market.
On the other hand, If we compare it to Manhwa, a comic book from South Korea, it has as a more monotone and unattractive plot that lead it less demanded on the market. The plot of Manhwa usually focuses only on romance genre. As it less demanded, the production of this kind of comic is also not as much as Japanese manga that can enter the global market in several languages version. Nevertheless, both country showed their own characteristics of drawing with story.
In conclusion, Japan and South Korea’smodern culture are both influencing; in term of popular music, drama, and comic book. However, each country has its own strength where Japan has better influence with its comic book called manga. While South Korea can give influence to the world with its Korean Pop and Korean Drama.
